Day 3 at the Recording Studios
By Kym Huynh on Mar 15, 2006 in Journal
Day 3 was officially the day we began work on original material. On Thursday, a few days before day 3 of recording, Mike and myself worked on an original called “Harmony”, which started recording basics in the studio with Clarence. Day 3 saw the addition of new tracks with Mike’s sexy new guitar, and building up the instrumentation.
One of the biggest issues with laying down vocals for these tracks is how little time is actually allocated for familiarizing with the songs. I wish I could be given a few weeks to really learn the song and deliver smashing vocals, but the reality is that we’re looking for a fast turnover, and time is a luxury we cannot afford. I’m going to have to go under the maxim of put in the work, get the ability up there, and go in with the right mindset.
I’ve been really paying attention to how people are talking lately, and been more conscious how I pronounce my words. Time to get the right accent into the songs boy-o!
It’s great watching Clarence and Mike get psyched up about a song. Clarence is adamant that it’s a hit-hit and their belief just further edges me on to deliver on the product at the end of the day.
The last 10% of the day was spent on getting down rough ideas for another new song called “Diamond Rings”. Clarence also thinks this one is a hit (haha Michael made the astute comment that the word hit is being thrown around a lot lately - the last four songs in fact) but the most surprising thing that came out of it, was how Clarence and Michael interpreted the song in a way which I would’ve never really thought. It’s definitely sounding a lot better than I envisioned, and they’re laying down a fantasy themed instrumental for the introduction to the album. HELL YEAH!
The best thing about watching everyone work together is watching synergy in progress. Clarence and Michael bouncing off each other, taking my ideas and running with it, getting all exited, it really makes the recording day worthwhile. What I never tire of is watching Michael happy when he hears the song. He transforms into this little kid with this wide grin, and you just know that things are going to be A-OK!
